Ride the City is a bicycle route planner to help you map a safe bike route from point A to point B in 46 cities (listed below).

Like other bicycle maps and routing tools, Ride the City finds the shortest distance between two points. Heres how: First, Ride the City avoids roads that arent meant for bicycling, like highways and busy streets. Second, Ride the City steers bikes to routes that maximize bike lanes, bike paths, greenways, and other bicycle friendly streets while avoiding steep hills.

The app includes bicycle directions for the following cities:

* Remembers your last bicycle route, in case you close the app for any reason.

FEATURES:

* GPS locate: TOGGLE the locate button to change the GPS mode, there are two modes. Touch the locate button to switch between the following modes: 1) When the locate button is BLUE, auto tracking is ON so that your position is always centered on the map, 2) when the locate button is WHITE, auto tracking is OFF and you can pan the map around.

* Bike shops: Ride the City displays bike shops and bike rental facilities, providing contact information and hours of operation. To find a bicycle route to a bike shop, simply touch a bike shop icon on the MAP and choose bike here. For a list of nearby bike shops, touch the Bike Shops menu button below the map.

* Route details: When a route is generated on the map, Ride the City displays the distance, estimated bicycle time, and elevation gain. It also tells you if a street along your route is a bike lane, bike path, or a caution area.

* Bike share: For cities with bike share programs, the app displays nearby bike share stations and the live feed shows the current number of bicycles and empty docks available, similar to Spotcycle or B-cycle

Latest reviews of Ride the City Free app for iPhone and iPad

Not great
Slow on IOS10 iPadAir2. App is not optimized for IOS10. Location tracking enabled at all times - there should be option to enable location only when using the app. Doesnt support landscape mode on the iPad. The app also doesnt distinguish between shared "sharrows", basic painted bike lanes or cycle-track. For example Sherbourne St. in Toronto is a more desirable route with cycle-track but on the map it looks like any other basic painted bike lane.
Doesnt work
Asked for Whiting, Indiana to Evanston, Illinois; this app is trying to tell Me those are in Denver, Colorado. Wonk wonk. Fail.
Buggy, barely functional
No matter what type of route is entered (safe, safer, or direct) the directions remain the same. It will add lengthy detours to avoid very short distances on roads without bike lanes. In one instance, instead of having me travel over a local freeway via pedestrian bridge, the suggested routes all involve a 10km detour around the freeway. Its handy being able to see local bike shops, and for the map to highlight trails, bike lanes and shared lanes, but for directions youre better off relying on Google and your own local knowledge.
Addresses completely wrong
Entered starting and ending locations using street number and name without abbreviations and both locations were incorrectly mapped. Did not see an option to use landscape mode. Would not load maps for some areas (these are old neighbourhoods that have been developed over 10 yrs)
No way to stop map from moving
This seems like it would be very helpful, but once you click the "current location" button, the map keeps snapping back to the current location every second, making it impossible to review the rest of the map.
